How to Join a Medicare Drug Plan?

Medicare has made it very easy to join Medicare Drug Plans. These Part D Plans can be joined directly through Medicare or by directly contacting the insurance company. However you choose to join, make a record of the transaction so that you have documentation just in case something happens to your file.

Things to have ready when applying for Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)

  • SSN.
  • Medicare Card.
  • Date When Part A or Part B starts, started.
  • Date of Birth.
  • Contact information.
  • Dates when other creditable coverage ends/ended.
  • Name of previous insurance company and plan number.
  • Medical records file.
  • Your tax return from two years ago if you are a high wage earner.

Ways to Join Medicare Part D:

  • Get a paper application from the company and fill it out and mail it in. Make a copy and get a proof of mailing.
  • Call the company directly and join over the phone. Or call Medicare directly and join over the phone (1-800-MEDICARE, TTY users call 1-877-486-2048). Make a notation of the representative's name, the date and the time of the phone call on a piece of paper. Take notes during the phone call. This does not need to be formal. Keep this piece of paper in a safe place in case there is ever any dispute about when you called and joined the plan.
  • Join over the Internet using either the company's website or through Medicare's website. Make sure this is done using a private computer through a secure connection. Print a receipt and save screen shots of your transactions.
